Discussion of Yin's Ch. 6 2010

Explain the procedures in doing a case study report and "what makes an exemplary case study."

  1. Procedures in doing a case study report:
1- Targeting case study reports: The case study reporter must determine the audience of their report. Are they reporting to academic colleagues, policy makers, practitioners, community leaders, and other professionals who don't specialize in case study or other social science research, special groups such as dissertation or thesis committee or those who funded their research.
2- Case study reports as part of larger, mixed methods studies: This is where the case study may have called for mixed methods to determine whether converging evidence might be obtained even through different methods. This also may have been based on a survey or quantitative analysis or archival data. This portion may also define the importance of frequent processes.
3- Illustrative Structures for Case Study Compositions: The different structures include Linear-Analytic Structures(standard approach-starts with problem being studied and review of prior literature, methods used and findings of data collection, analysis, conclusion and implications from findings). Comparative Structures (repeats same case study two or more times-comparing alternative descriptions or explanations of same case), Chronological Structures - present evidence in chronological order relevant to both explanatory and exploratory case studies, Suspense Structures (inverts the linear-analytic structure, "answer" or outcome of case study and its significance. and Finally Unsequenced Structures( structure of sections/chapters are in no particular order of importance).

  2. 4-Procedures to be Followed in doing a Case Study Report: Rewriting is the key, begin composing as soon as literature review and case study is designed. As soon as this is done the bibliography section and methods section can be drafted. Following these sections the preliminary literature review that lead to or compliments the research questions and propositions being studied can be completed. After the data is collected and before the analysis begins, descriptive data about case being studied can be included into the report. this data reported includes the quantitative and qualitative information of the case study.

What makes an exemplary Case Study?
-The researcher goes above and beyond the methodlogical procedures which have been lined out in Yin's book. The researcher must also complete the following: Ensure that the case study is significant, is completed, has considered alternative procedures, displays sufficient evidence and composed in an engaging manner.

  3. Quote: Page 165 - Yin again makes the novice researcher or at least me feel less confident in writing a case study report.
"As a general rule, the compositional phase puts the greatest demands on a case study investigator." "Of course most investigators can eventually learn to compose easily and well, an inexperience in composing should not be a deterrent to doing case studies."

Question: Who is my primary audience for a case study report? Academic Colleagues or Thesis Committee? Or a mix of the two?

Fact: The greatest error to be made is to compose a report from an egocentric perspective. Occurs when a researcher doesn't identify a certain audience or doesn't understand certain/specific needs of an audience.

  4. Question: The question-and-answer format for case study reports seems to be so easy. Could this possibly be????

Quote: (p.172) "The format (question-and-answer)allowed hurried readers to find exactly the relevant portions of each case." If I were going to do a case study, this would be a format I would be interested in using since this is how I like to read.

Fact: Yin states that creating a case study report is one of the most challenging aspects of doing a case study. He advises to compose portions of the case study early (e.g., the bibliography and the methodology section), rather than waiting until the end of the data analysis process.

  5. Yin identifies three important procedures in doing case study reports. First, a researcher should start composing the report early in the analytic process. It is never too early to begin writing. Yin suggests the bibliography, methodological, preliminary literature review, and the descriptive data about the cases being studied sections to be started early before analysis has been completed. Therefore, more attention can be devoted to the analysis itself.
The second procedure deals with whether or not the case identities should be real or anonymous. Yin suggests the most desirable option is to disclose the identities of both the case and the individuals, within the constraints for protecting human subjects.
The third procedure Yin mentions is related to the overall quality of the study. A draft of the report should be reviewed not only by peers but by the participants and informants in the case.

An exemplary case study possesses five characteristics identified by Yin. First, the case study must be significant. This means the cases should be unusual and of general public interest and underlying issues are nationally important. Second, the case study must be "complete." Boundaries of the case should be given explicit attention. The researcher should expend an exhaustive effort in collecting relevant evidence. Also, the case study should not end just because of time constraints (the end of the semester) or because of exhausted resources. Third, the case study must consider alternative perspectives. The citing of rival claims or alternative perspectives should be part of a good abstract for the case study. Fourth, the case study must display sufficient evidence. Both supporting and challenging data should be displayed so the reader can draw independent conclusions about the validity of a particular interpretation. And, fifth, the case study must be composed in an engaging manner.

  6. Quote: (Page 165) "Most of the notable case study scholars have been the ones who liked to compose and actually had a flair for writing."

Fact:(Page 165) The successful investigator usually perceives the compositional phase as an opportunity-to make a significant contribution to knowledge or practice.

Question: Yin mentions many times the importance of knowing your audience when preparing your case study report. Is it always possible to know your audience? And, in identifying your audience, wouldn't bias be a factor? Are you writing to a specific audience because of a particular bias and to further your agenda as a researcher?

  7. The procedure in doing a case study report is as follows: First, the researcher must be ready and willing to write and rewrite and write, and write…Ha! Start composing early; it’s never too soon to start writing. After the literature review and the case study have been designed do the bibliography and the methodological sections. The third section is the preliminary literature review. Next, the researcher needs to write about the descriptive data about the cases being studied. Quantitative and qualitative data should be included in the description.

The above components are needed in a exemplary case study along with the following:
    1. The case study should be significant, including real life situations.
    2. The case study must be complete, time and attention was given.
    3. The case study must consider alternative perspectives.
    4. The case study needs to include adequate evidence, know your subject.
    4. The case study must be created in an engaging manner, seduce the reader!

Quote (Pg189): “A good manuscript is one that “seduces” the eye.”

Question: How can I make research “seductive”? Lol, this term Yin used really caught my attention!

Fact: The compositional phase puts the greatest demand on the case study researcher. I feel this demand and stress when I think of the literature review.

  8. EVERYONE---After class on Wednesday, I asked Dr. Hendrix if we could combine Journal 1 and 2, since they were closely related. She agreed. Of course the depth and content will need to reflect both journal topics. Dr. Hendrix, please comment if I am off base here! Thanks!

  9. In response to Ann's quote:
"As a general rule, the compositional phase puts the greatest demands on a case study investigator." I chose this as my fact, because the literature review seems demanding to me.

    In response to Ann's question:
Who is my primary audience for a case study report? I am thinking whoever you want to see the research. For example mine would be teachers and administration since I am looking into how a technology enriched classroom effects student achievement, motivation, and attitudes.

  11. In response to Tanya's Fact: Yin advises to compose portions of the case study early...maybe this is why Dr. Hendrix is trying to get us on the ball with our literature reviews--starting them last semester and adding to now.

  12. Yin designates three important procedures for completing a case study report. First, it is essential that the researcher begins composing early in the research process. Yin emphasizes that as a reasearcher, you should begin yesterday! After the literature review has been completed, and the case study designed, the bibliography and methodological sections of the final report can be completed. Later, changes can be made to these parts of the report if necessary. Also, the preliminary literature review can be completed. The researcher uses this section of the report to connect existing literature to research questions and propositions. Yin remarks that this section can also be revisted as the research continues. After data collection is complete, but before analysis begins, another section of the report can be completed. This section relates descriptive data about the cases being studied. After completing these steps, the next consideration involving case study reports is making choices concerning anonymity of the case. The decision on this matter depends upon the particulars of the case study. Yin notes that this issue involves two levels of anonymity, that of the entire case (or cases), and that of an individual person within a case (or cases). Yin says the best idea is to reveal the identities of both the case and the individuals, within the rules for protecting human subjects. The third procedure to be followed in the case study report procedure is to have the draft report reviewed by peers and the participants and informants in the study. These reviews by others may even become part of the final report. Through this procedure, the overall accuracy of the case and its construct validity is greatly increased.

  13. According to Yin, an exemplary case study includes five general characteristics. First, the case must be significant. Otherwords, it must be unusual and of interest to general public interest, and in terms of the theoretical or practical, the issues covered must be of national importance. Also, exemplary case studies must be complete. In order to complete the case study convincingly, the researcher must be careful to set the boundaries of the case and stick to them, provide an exhaustive amount of relevant evidence, and conclude the case only when all aspects of the case study have been thoroughly explored and noted. A third component of exemplary case studies is that all rival propositions and evidence are cited and thoroughly examined. Also, to be considered exemplary, a case study must display sufficient evidence. The researcher must present the relevant evidence in such a manner that the audience can come to their own conclusions and analysis. Finally, and possibly the most important, exemplary case studies should be well-written. Yin uses descriptive words such as engagement, enticement, and seduction when referring to the final report of a case study. He feels a researcher's inspirtation must be communicated to his audience in an exemplary report. After all, the final report represents your opportunity to shine as a researcher.

  14. In response to ADotson, I have been thinking about your fact that it is an error to write a report from an egocentric perspective. I guess it is a mistake to assume anything after you begin your research. Does it seem like the research takes on a life of its own? I guess egocentric perspectives would compel the researcher to follow his own agenda? Is this what Yin means? (I've been asking myself that question a lot lately!)

Mrs. Dalrymple, in response to your question about the question answer format for case study final reports, I'm all for it! I suppose it would depend on how it fits your case study, however, and it would be a lot more difficult to "engage, entice, and seduce" your audience. And another thing, I'm sure it is not easy--nothing in research is!

Corey, as we know from our journal-writing experiences, if we can make tacos, oak trees, jigsaw puzzles, and painting techniques "seductive", then I suppose we could manage it for case study reports! As authors of our own research reports, we must "sell" our work to the audience, whom ever it may be. If we don't, all our hard research work will be in vain!

  16. When completing case study researchers have to have a well developed set of procedures along with being willing to rewrite. When composing a case study researchers should start early so there is plenty of time to make changes if necessary. It is important for researchers to first start the literature review and then complete a well designed bibliography and methods sections. Then construct the preliminary literature review. Case study researchers then need to create descriptive data about the case. Descriptive data can be quantitative or qualitative data. Creating an exemplary case study need to have different components. They need to be significant and relate to real life situations and the case study needs to be well thought out. The case study needs to be unbiased and show different perspectives. Exemplary case studies also need to be engaging. Researchers need to remember to “hook” the audience.
Barb: I thought that your quote was very interesting. When using a case study Yin explains that some case studies are represented in a narrative form. I can see how someone who loves to write and is creative would enjoy this type of method. It allows them to add personality into their research. I wish I was one of those people.
Quote: (Page 165) "Most of the notable case study scholars have been the ones who liked to compose and actually had a flair for writing."
Ann: Your fact really made me think. I agree with Yin because you are not writing a research paper for yourself. You want to be able to encourage your audience to benefit from your findings. If a researcher doesn’t know their audience, there is no connect between the research and the audience.
Fact: The greatest error to be made is to compose a report from an egocentric perspective. Occurs when a researcher doesn't identify a certain audience or doesn't understand certain/specific needs of an audience.

Quote: One additional difference between the case study and other toes of research is that your case study report can itself be a significant communication device. Page 168
There are at least four important formations for written case study reports. The first is the classic single-case, multiple-case version, both single and multiple case studies, and multiple case studies only. Pages 170-172
Question: Yin explains that linear-analytic structures seem to have more structure to follow when completing a case study. Is this structure most commonly used?

  17. According to Yin exemplary case study reports include these five topics: 1) target the case study reports; 2) case study reports as part of larger, mixed methods studies; 3) illustrative structures for case study compositions; 4) procedures to be followed in doing a case study report; 5) in conclusion, speculations on the characteristics of an exemplary case study covering the design and content of the case

  18. Question: Yin makes an interesting point that our case studies have the possibility of reaching and educating a wider variety of people (not just specialists on our topic) than a traditional research report. I am intrigued by this. With so much press and attention on autism spectrum disorders, I am wondering how to make my research more accessible so that it can help to educate people about the social benefits of the co-teaching model for children with autism spectrum disorders. My question is how can we gain wider audience for our research?
Quote: 179 “From nearly the beginning of your investigation, certain sections of your report will always be draftable, and this drafting should proceed even before data collection and analysis have been completed.”
Fact: In order to report the case study in the case study in the most effective way, the researcher should take into account the preferences of the audience and examine prior case study reports that were successful.

  19. Barb: I liked the quote you chose from Yin. Writers with "flair" are always more intersting to read.
Tanya and Corey: Thank goodness we started our literature reviews last semester. I feel much more comfortable now with adding to it.

  20. Corey,
Thank you for your response. I was thinking the same thing. I suppose I just needed verification.

  21. Barb - I would love to have "flair" in my case study report. How is it that we add "flair" into something that needs to be so straight forward and full of facts and figures?

  22. Corey - I love your quote: “A good manuscript is one that “seduces” the eye.”
Ok...how in the world do we add "Flair" and how do we "seduce" the reader with a case study report? My goodness my head is twirling!

You are correct. You may combine journals three and four into one, longer journal if you want to do so.

  26. Yin writes about three procedures which he says pertain specifically to case studies. In the section "When and how to start composing", Yin states that the researcher should begin drafting the bibliography and methodological sections from nearly the beginning of the investigation. The second procedure involves the dilemna of whether or not to accurately identify the case study's informants. Yin suggests disclosure allows the reader to become familiar with a new case study in light of prior knowledge. Also, disclosure allows footnotes and citations to be checked without the burden of disguised names. The third procedure is to have a draft of the report reviewed by peers, participants and informants. Their comments might even be used as a part of the case study.

To produce an exemplary case study, Yin suggests five general characteristics. First, the case study must be significant. He explains this means the case or cases must be unusual and of general public interest and that the underlying issues are nationally important.
Second, the case study must be complete. To do this, the researcher must give specific attention to the distinction between the phenomenon being studied and its context, convince the reader that all the evidence was thoroughly explored and that the researcher did simply end the study because of time or other constraints. This is connected with Yin's fourth characteristic which states that the case study must effectively convey the most relevant evidence to the reader.
Another quality of an exemplary case study is that it takes into account and addresses alternative perspectives.
Finally, Yin writes that the case study must be written in an engaging manner. Without the ability to entice readers a case study doesn't even get a chance to be an exemplary one.

Question, Quote & Fact: Getting in on the tale- end of this strand, I noticed that all of the portions of the text I had marked while reading were brought up by my peers and the questions I had while reading had been similar ones.

Corey, you had me going back to read page 189 for the "seduces" quote!

Several of you mentioned the egocentric factor and I can see where that is closely related to bias and that both could come into play as one "writes to his/her audience." I think writing to one's audience is a trait we teachers try to instill in even our young writers.

  27. Quote: pg 190 "Engagement, enticement, and seduction-these are unusual characteristics of case study." I like all those nouns, but hard to equate them with a case study!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Fact: pg 166 Everyone has difficulties in composing reports, whether case studies or not. To succeed at composing investigators must take specific steps during the conduct of the study to reduce barriers of composition.
Question: I mean I understand the need for good grammar. Is it a question of professionalism, or expectation for the composition standards?

Christina that is a good question about the linear-analytical case study. It seems like the best way to analyze the data. Maybe not the best but easiest to understand as a novice researcher.

The procedures for doing a case study report involve three main ideas. The first is to compose, compose, compose as a researcher can and as early in the study as one can start drafting. A good place to start is the bibliography and the methodology to be used. The second procedure is to decide if the participants will be identified in the study or not. If the researcher decides to disclose the participant’s names then, the reader may be able to identify with the results more easily. The reader may recall background knowledge of the participants and be able to draw conclusions faster. The third procedure is to allow peer s to review the study to allow for a stronger result and analysis. The peers may disagree with the results, but this is not relevant the review is for the researcher to have construct validity of the study and the ways the study was conducted.
To make an exemplary case study, one must ensure that the study has a significance within the data. Also, the study should be somewhat unusual and of public interest, and the underlying issues are of a national importance. Next, the characteristics of the study must be complete, the boundaries have been defined and followed, expended exhaustive effort in collection evidence of data, and to make sure that the researcher can complete the study in the right amount of time and not to run out of time in the middle of the study. The researcher must make sure the rival theories have been looked at and as needed worked into the study. The study must be complete in its evidence collection, and to make sure the evidence is relevant for the reader. Finally, the study should be presented in an engaging manner, so the audience would want to read the data and evidence related to the study. The researcher must use proper grammar and to lure the reader into reading from paragraph to paragraph
